The Men in Black phenomenon, in which UFO witnesses were questioned by mysterious agents, were actually military and CIA personnel in many cases, added Redfern, who said that ‘MIB’ activity occurred in the UK as well as the US Surveillance of well-known figures of the 1950s contactee movement, such as George Adamski, George Van Tassel and George Hunt Williamson also took place. Through the Freedom of Information Act, Redfern was able to retrieve the FBI files on these contactees, and found that they contained factual accounts of interviews and conferences rather than evaluations of their claims. According to Leonard Stringfield, an early investigator of UFO crashes, some of the people involved in the contactee movement were actually plants used by agencies to infiltrate the UFO community.
